The Presbyterian University College notes that the Presbyterian Church of Ghana ranks third in the health delivery sector of the country. The Church has years of experience in nursing training up to the diploma level. These days, however, healthcare delivery is increasingly becoming more and more sophisticated globally. With the increasing world population there is also an increasing demand for quality health practitioners. The College feels that the time has come for the Church’s training in the nursing field to advance to meet these local as well as global demands, challenges and standards.

It is also noted that the proposal is in line with current government policy to increase manpower development in the health sector and is one way of contributing to the training of health personnel to support government’s efforts. It will help to alleviate the problems being faced by the health sector because of the continuous exodus of health personnel.

The educational philosophy of the College (derived from that of the Church) aims at catering for the social needs of people by equipping them with the know-how so that they can earn a livelihood for themselves. These days there are many young people who are qualified for university education but for which access is limited. Opening the degree nursing programme will give opportunity for some of these young people to get the chance to acquire knowledge for their future well-being.

Objectives of the programme

It would meet the aspirations of most potential candidates and therefore be demand-driven.

It would eventually lead to the establishment of the Faculty of Health and Medical Sciences at the Asante-Akyem campus.

The programme will produce professional nurse with advanced knowledge and practical skills and attitudes to recognise the total health needs of individuals, families and communities.

The programme expects to produce a total person who will be selfless and endeavour to meet the health needs of humanity

The programme envisages that arrangements would be made for students to have considerable practical training during the 4-year programme to make it easier for them to enter the professional field at the end of the programme.
