Educational Transformation: Hybrid eLearning at PUCG – PUCG Trains Faculty in Online Teaching and Learning

The Presbyterian University College, Ghana is to engage in a hybrid or blended pedagogy of eLearning and conventional physical interactions as contemporary learning solution to meeting higher educational demands of all learners and those disadvantaged by geographical boundaries.

In engaging both faculty and students in this technology-enriched learning environment, the University organized a two-week intensive online teaching course for its faculty members at the Okwahu Campus, Abetifi.

Integrating learning management system in the University will allow Internet-based teaching in synchronous (real time) and asynchronous (anywhere, anytime) interactive engagement of faculty and students.

The Faculty Certificate in Online Teaching Course (FCOT) equipped faculty members with the required expertise to use digitized learning management system for teaching and learning purposes.

Contents of the course focused on theoretical constructs and foundations of learning and eLearning, e-pedagogical content knowledge and management, problem-based, multimedia and interactive course design and strategies, eLearning management systems, and eLearning facilitation, assessment and evaluation.

The broader context of the course went beyond professional development to restructuring conventional academic practices to technology-and learner-centred driven focus, which would be replicated on all campuses.

Participants overall experience through course evaluation instruments and personal interactions was positive and expectant.  Faculty members who participated in the program were highly excited and assertive to reconnoitre possibilities of this innovative pedagogical strategies.

Presenting Certificates to the 12 deserving faculty graduands, the President of the University, Rev. Prof. Emmanuel Adow Obeng assured members of his leadership and general support to advance e-learning in the University. He reiterated the importance of eLearning in global and contemporary education and praised faculty members for their bold initiative and innovativeness.

Led by Dr. Mrs. Josephine Larbi-Apau, Head of the Graduate School and eLearning Management Consultant, the team of facilitators included Dr. Stephen Asunka, Instructional Technology and Media Specialist, Mr. Eric Amankwa, Systems Security and Computer Scientist, Mr. Albert L. Tetteh, eLearning Management Systems and Computer Scientist, Mr. Richard Okoampa, ICT Coordinator, and Miss Gloria Agyekum, Senior Administrative Assistant.

It was chaired by Dr. John Adu Kumi, Dean, School of Business & Economics, Dr. G. O. Lartey, Dean, Faculty of Science & Technology, Mr. B. O. Bempong, Dean of Students and Mrs Eunice Mirekua Arthur, Head, Department of Agribusiness. ‘
