{"id":7050,"date":"2019-01-31T16:02:39","date_gmt":"2019-01-31T16:02:39","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.presbyuniversity.edu.gh\/site\/?p=7050"},"modified":"2019-01-31T18:49:10","modified_gmt":"2019-01-31T18:49:10","slug":"ghana-must-rethink-its-legal-education","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.presbyuniversity.edu.gh\/site\/ghana-must-rethink-its-legal-education\/","title":{"rendered":"Ghana must Rethink its Legal Education"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p>The Deputy Attorney General and Deputy Minister of Justice\nof Ghana, Mr. Godfred Yeboah Dame says legal education in Ghana needs proper scrutiny of the mechanisms for broadening access &nbsp;whilst safeguarding the integrity and quality\nof the profession. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>According to Mr. Godfred Yeboah Dame, the increase in the\nnumber of Universities offering the Bachelor of Laws programme has made it to become\nimperative for us to rethink the delivery of legal education in Ghana. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>He made the observation during the roll call to initiate\nthe first batch of 66 law students into the Faculty of Law of the Presbyterian\nUniversity College, Ghana held over the weekend at the Kumasi Campus.&nbsp; <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The Deputy Attorney General and Deputy Minister of Justice\nposited that mediocrity, misguided\ncrave for cheap wealth, substandard delivery of legal services and dishonesty\nhave hardly been the hallmark of legal training and the legal profession. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The\nastute lawyer believes a dedication to excellence in the law, careful and\nserious training, industry and meticulousness surely, are ultimately rewarding\nfor the lawyer.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Mr. Godfred Yeboah Dame cautioned that \u201ca poorly trained lawyer is a danger to society\nand a threat to the sustenance of our democracy as a nation. Ultimately, a\ndishonest bar, needless to say, breeds a corrupt bench and affects the core of\nthe society we seek to build.\u201d <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The Deputy Attorney General and Deputy Minister of Justice\nsaid Ghana cannot afford to gamble with\nits future by sacrificing these noble attributes of the legal profession in the\ntraining of law students. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The\nDeputy Attorney General and Deputy Minister of Justice admonished the Law\nStudents to be worthy Ambassadors of the Presbyterian University College, Ghana.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cAs pioneering students of this Faculty, you will be\nuniquely registered in the annals of the University as the first batch of 66\nstudents to be on roll call as Law Students in this University. The burden\nrests on you to jealously guard this enviable achievement and justify your\ninclusion.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image\"><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"640\" height=\"427\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/www.presbyuniversity.edu.gh\/site\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/01\/pucg-3.jpg?resize=640%2C427&#038;ssl=1\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-7047\" srcset=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/www.presbyuniversity.edu.gh\/site\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/01\/pucg-3.jpg?w=750&amp;ssl=1 750w, https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/www.presbyuniversity.edu.gh\/site\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/01\/pucg-3.jpg?resize=300%2C200&amp;ssl=1 300w, https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/www.presbyuniversity.edu.gh\/site\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/01\/pucg-3.jpg?resize=360%2C240&amp;ssl=1 360w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 640px) 100vw, 640px\" \/><figcaption> <br><em>\ufeffA section of the students admitted into the Faculty of Law during the ceremony <\/em> <\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p><strong><em>Ethical discipline<\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Addressing\nthe law students, the renowned legal practitioner said the issue of ethical\ndiscipline becomes even increasingly important in these modern times. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>According\nto him \u201cevery law school has a\nprofound duty and a unique opportunity to inculcate principles of professional\nethics and standards in its students.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The\nastute lawyer advised that in order to familiarise law students with ethical\ndemands of the professions, law faculties should inculcate moot court practices\nas veritable part of their curriculum.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In\norder to reduce the cost of justice to consumers, he posited that \u201cas a\nprofession with a monopoly over the performance of certain services, we have\nspecial obligations to the consumers of justice to be energetic and imaginative\nin producing the best quality of justice at the lowest possible costs for those\nwho use it, and with a minimum of delay.\u201d &nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong><em>Cost of legal service&nbsp; <\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The\nDeputy Minister of Justice expressed concern about the cost of legal services\nto the public. He said a large percentage of the population do not have\nmeaningful access to legal services.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>He\ndisclosed that in too many cases, clients are &#8220;ripped off&#8221; by fees\nthat are greatly out of proportion to the complexity of the transaction or the\ntime spent by the lawyer.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The\nDeputy Attorney General prescribed alternative dispute resolution mechanisms as\na powerful avenue to dealing with the challenge.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong><em>Sacrifices <\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Mr.\nGodfred Yeboah Dame noted that to\nstudy law properly, the student must be prepared to forgo the pleasures of\nprivate life at the most inconvenient moments and for indefinite periods. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cIt is a heavy price\nto pay but the rewards are great intellectually, and when you are called to the\nbar, the rewards will be greater financially and spiritually,\u201d he said. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The Deputy Attorney\nGeneral and Deputy Minister of Justice advised that students, once admitted into the study of the law,\nshould be given copies of the bar association\u2019s rules of ethics of the\nprofession to guide them through their training and professional walk.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>The Deputy Attorney General and Deputy Minister of Justice of Ghana, Mr. Godfred Yeboah Dame says legal education in Ghana needs proper scrutiny of the mechanisms for broadening access &nbsp;whilst safeguarding the integrity and quality of the profession.
