BSc. Midwifery

Overview

The Bachelor of Science (BSc.) in Midwifery is a 4-year programme based at the Asante Akyem Campus. The programme is embedded in the mission and vision of the Presbyterian University College, Ghana which seeks to train the head, hands, and heart of students and prepare them for a challenging and rewarding career across the continuum of pregnancy, birth and beyond. Students will learn through a combination of academic study and clinical placements preparing them for clinical practice and leadership roles.  Following completion of the programme, students are eligible to sit for the licensing examination to become registered midwives. This programme is affiliated to University of Development Studies.

Admission/Entry Requirements

West African Senior School Certificate Examination (WASSCE) Applicants

For WASSCE applicants, the applicants must have Credit passes (A1 – C6) in Core English, Core Mathematics, and Integrated Science. The elective subjects should be selected from any three (3) of the following areas: Science, General Arts, General Agriculture with Chemistry, Home Economics with Food and Nutrition. The aggregate should be 36 or better. This entry is at level 100.

Senior Secondary School Certificate Examination (SSSCE) Applicants

For SSSCE Applicants, an applicant must have Credit passes (A – D) in Core English, Core Mathematics, and Integrated Science. The elective subjects should be selected from any three (3) of the following areas: Science, General Arts, General Agriculture with Chemistry, Home Economics with Food and Nutrition. The aggregate should be 24 or better. This entry is at level 100.

Diploma Applicants

Diploma in Midwifery should be obtained from a recognised Institution, in addition to the basic qualification at WASSSCE / ‘O’ Level. Such candidates who must also be Registered Midwives (RMs) may be admitted to the Third Year of the programme after a selection interview. Post basic midwives and Diploma general nurses who wish to pursue the Midwifery programme may be admitted to the Second Year of the programme.

International Students

Foreign students may be admitted on the basis of qualifications from their home countries for which the Ghana Tertiary Education Commission (GTEC) shall determine equivalences. Evidence of proficiency in English Language will be required in the case of applicants from non-English speaking countries. In addition, foreign applicants must satisfy the professional entry requirements determined by the Nursing and Midwifery Council of Ghana.

Mature Applicants

There will be no mature applicants for the midwifery programme.
